Myponie Point – Hawsons Iron Project

The proposal

The proposal can generally be described as a new bulk commodity port facility at Myponie Point (north of Wallaroo, Yorke Peninsula) for the export of iron ore. The ore would be delivered to the port via a slurry pipeline from a mine in north-western NSW (south of Broken Hill).

The proposal includes the following components:

  • Deep water port comprising a 2.2 km long jetty and ship loading wharf. The port would also includes an ore dewatering plant and ore stockpiling areas.
  • Ore slurry pipeline (buried) and water pipeline (to return water from the dewatering plant back to the mine). The pipelines would also include pumping stations, a valve station and slurry discharge ponds (for emergency purposes).
  • The pipelines would be located within a 40m wide easement of approximately 392 km in length, following an alignment from the port that heads in a north-easterly direction to a point on the SA/NSW border approximately 41 km south of Cockburn.

The proposal has been declared an ‘impact assessed’ development by the Minister for Planning. The next step is for the proponent to lodge a detailed application with the State Planning Commission to determine the assessment requirements for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process.
