SA Offshore Windfarm Project

The proposal

Construction and operation of a 600MW offshore windfarm, comprising up to 75 wind turbine generators, network of undersea cables, offshore substation and subsea cables, with onshore substation (and transformers), new overhead transmission line, battery energy storage system, temporary construction works, access roads and associated civil infrastructure.

The offshore elements will be located approximately 10 km off the coast of Kingston, in the state’s south-east, being at the southern end of the Coorong and within the Limestone Coast region. The development area would be directly adjacent a Commonwealth Marine Area, with components of the project infrastructure situated within the Upper South-East Marine Park.

As a windfarm located in state marine waters, the development pathway was prescribed as ‘impact-assessed’ in accordance with s.108(1)(b) of the Planning Development and Infrastructure Act 2016 and r.27(a1)(a) of the Planning, Development and Infrastructure (General) Regulations 2017.

On 7 August 2023, the Minister for Planning determined not to grant a development authorisation for the development (and thereby no further assessment of the application will take place), pursuant to s.115(2)(a) of the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016.
