Automatic Mutual Recognition to commence in South Australia for building related accredited professionals

Published Friday, 1 July 2022

From 1 July 2022, building industry workers who are currently accredited in another state or territory and wish to work in South Australia, will be able to do so under the Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR) scheme.

AMR will also make it easier for accredited South Australian building industry workers looking to take up work interstate using their SA accreditation. SA building professionals will be able to use their current accreditation without having to apply and pay for a new one when working interstate.

It is important that accredited professionals check the local arrangements with the state or territory regulator where they are intending to work to determine if they are eligible for AMR. Prior to commencing work in SA, interstate building professionals will need to notify the Accreditation Authority via the Automatic Mutual Recognition notification form.

AMR has been progressively rolling out since 1 July 2021 for a range of occupations in participating states and territories. AMR is expected to increase the mobility of Australia’s workforce over time, and help businesses operate more seamlessly across Australia.

When fully implemented across the various occupations and jurisdictions, it is estimated that AMR could lead to an additional $2.4 billion in economic activity over ten years as a result of savings to people and businesses, productivity improvements and extra surge capacity in response to natural disasters.

AMR is set out in the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 of the Commonwealth and is implemented by state and territory governments. More information about the AMR scheme can be found on the Commonwealth Government website Improving occupational mobility.

A register of South Australian accredited professionals is available. All accredited professionals are regulated by the Accreditation Authority under the Planning, Development and Infrastructure (Accredited Professionals) Regulations 2019.
