Have your say on the future of South Australia’s regions

South Australians are being invited to shape the future of their region, with public consultation now open for three new country regional plans.

The State Planning Commission is seeking feedback on the Yorke Peninsula and Mid North, Far North, and Eyre and Western Regional Plans. These regional plans play an important role in guiding sustainable growth by identifying land use and long-term infrastructure over a 15 to 30-year period. They outline where new housing and employment areas will be located, how services will be delivered, and what infrastructure is needed while exploring different growth scenarios. Planning for this growth and change is essential to ensure that the regions remain sustainable and prosperous

Yorke Peninsula and Mid North Regional Plan key priorities

  • Prepare for a 38.3% population increase by 2054 driven by growth in tourism, agriculture, and mining.
  • Deliver diverse housing near employment hubs like Port Pirie and Clare for a changing population including smaller households, and seasonal workers.
  • Support economic growth and investment including critical mineral extraction and processing.
  • Boost primary industries through value-adding and sustainable land practices.
  • Upgrade transport infrastructure to improve access to services and support regional growth.

Far North Regional Plan key priorities

  • Promote housing diversity for ageing residents, seasonal workers, smaller households and tourists.
  • Capitalise on opportunities in mining, renewables, agriculture, and tourism
  • Protect biodiversity, cultural heritage, and ecosystems like Lake Eyre Basin.
  • Strengthen connectivity for remote towns such as William Creek and Tarcoola.
  • Use climate data to mitigate risks from heat, drought and extreme weather.

Eyre and Western Regional Plan key priorities

  • Provide housing options for ageing populations and seasonal workers.
  • Develop Whyalla, Ceduna, and Port Lincoln as economic hubs and ensure infrastructure is in place for growth.
  • Expand tourism infrastructure to meet growing visitor demand.
  • Support seafood, livestock, and agricultural industries to tackle climate, water and freight challenges.
  • Back renewable energy initiatives like the Hydrogen Jobs Plan and Port Bonython Hydrogen Hub.
  • Improve transport connectivity for major centres and smaller townships.

The Plans can be viewed on the Regional Planning Portal.

The public can share their feedback on the YourSAy website:

Consultation closes at 5:00 pm on Wednesday 7 May 2025. The Plans will be finalised late 2025.
